2024 World Conference on Science Literacy

The 2024 World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL) is set to take place in Beijing, China, from December 5 to 6. Hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), with support from UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC), the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the event aims to advance global science literacy under the theme “Enhance Science Literacy, Empower Joint Development.”

A Global Platform for Science Literacy

The WCSL will bring together participants from 23 countries and 10 international organizations, including distinguished experts and leaders in science and technology.

Key Highlights:

  • Opening Ceremony & Keynotes: Leaders such as Ezra Clark (UNESCO), Gong Ke (WFEO), and Julie Anne Luft (American National Science Teaching Association) will deliver thought-provoking insights.
  • Five Thematic Forums: Focus on topics such as frontier science, public science literacy, and leveraging new technologies for global science education.
  • Cultural Tour Event: Promoting the integration of science, culture, and community engagement.

Thematic Forums Driving Innovation

The conference will host five thematic forums, addressing pressing issues and innovative approaches to science literacy:

  1. Popularizing Frontier Sciences to Support Innovation: Insights into the role of advanced science in driving technological progress.
  2. Multi-stakeholder Collaborations for Science Literacy: Strategies for building partnerships to enhance public understanding of science.
  3. Leveraging New Technologies for Literacy: Exploring AI and emerging tech in science education.
  4. Regional Practices in Science Popularization: Sharing global best practices and regional success stories.
  5. 31st National Science Popularization Theory Seminar: Discussions on the latest theories in effective science communication.

Special Event: SciComm Dialogue

The “SciComm Dialogue” will feature Karl Kruszelnicki and Li Xiangyi, winners of the prestigious UNESCO Kalinga Prize for Science Popularization. These renowned communicators will share their personal journeys and impactful methods in making science accessible to the public.
