China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) hosted a landmark multilateral event titled “Hydrogen Powering Climate Action: Towards A Clean Energy Future with Net-Zero Emissions” on November 13 at the China Pavilion during COP29. This marks a pivotal moment as the first hydrogen-themed event led by a Chinese company at the prestigious climate conference.

Co-organized by Sinopec, the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association (IHFCA), and the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center (FECO) of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the event highlighted China’s leadership in green hydrogen innovation and its commitment to global climate action.

Two critical reports were released during the event:
- Progress Report on the COP28 International Cooperation Initiative: This report highlighted advancements in the safe, climate-beneficial, and sustainable development of hydrogen energy.
- IHFCA Green Hydrogen Economy Report: It showcased China’s practices in green hydrogen innovation, emphasizing sustainable, low-carbon strategies for energy production and international collaboration.
Ma Yongsheng’s Call for Global Collaboration
Ma Yongsheng, Chairman of Sinopec, delivered a keynote emphasizing collective action to build a robust hydrogen industry ecosystem. He called for:
- Increased international cooperation in hydrogen technology.
- Openness and innovation in the hydrogen value chain.
- Trade facilitation across global hydrogen networks.

Sinopec is at the forefront of developing technologies like green hydrogen, geothermal energy, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Key initiatives include:
- Launching China’s first 20,000-ton photovoltaic green hydrogen demonstration project.
- Planning a 100,000-ton/year wind and green hydrogen integration project.
- Developing a full hydrogen value chain, including production, storage, transportation, and utilization.
Hydrogen Refueling Milestones
Sinopec leads the global hydrogen refueling market with:
- 138 hydrogen refueling stations.
- 11 hydrogen fuel cell supply centers.
- A 40% share of China’s hydrogen refueling volume in 2023.
