On average, nearly 730,000 people cross Shenzhen’s borders daily, with peak days exceeding 1.04 million—numbers that underscore the city’s pivotal role in connecting mainland China with Hong Kong and beyond.
The Engine Behind the Boom
Several factors are driving this unprecedented mobility. The Greater Bay Area’s “one-hour living circle”—a vision for seamless connectivity—has gained momentum with improved infrastructure and cross-border services. Meanwhile, China’s “China Travel” tourism campaign has drawn international visitors, while visa exemptions and streamlined entry processes have made crossing borders easier than ever.
At Huanggang Port, a 24/7 checkpoint, nighttime traffic has skyrocketed by 37% on weekdays and 23% on weekends, thanks to upgrades to Shenzhen’s nightlife and the opening of Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park.
Tech-Driven Efficiency
Shenzhen’s ports are also setting new standards for border efficiency. Shenzhen Bay Port, near the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, has introduced document-free clearance lanes and facial recognition technology, cutting processing times and boosting clearance efficiency by 37.2%. Today, one in four travelers breezes through without presenting physical documents.
A Magnet for Global Travelers
Foreign arrivals have surged as well, with 2.64 million international travelers processed so far this year—a 41% increase from 2024. Of these, 560,000 entered visa-free, more than double last year’s figures, thanks to policies like the 240-hour visa-free transit and expanded exemptions.
