This represents a 14.09% year-on-year increase, highlighting the growing global demand for Chinese stainless steel products. The export volume for the first seven months of 2024 was also 15.70% higher than the same period last year, reflecting the strong competitiveness of Chinese stainless steel in the international market.
In July alone, stainless steel imports were 119,700 tons, a decrease of 8.84% from the previous month and a 12.54% drop compared to the same period in 2023. Despite this, the overall trend for the year shows that China’s stainless steel industry remains resilient, with a significant recovery in external market demand.

Import Trends of Raw Materials
China’s imports of nickel ore and ferronickel, essential raw materials for stainless steel production, also showed varying trends. From January to July 2024, the country imported 19.6145 million tons of nickel ore, an 11.88% year-on-year decrease. However, ferronickel imports saw a substantial increase, totaling 5.1489 million tons, up by 20.14% compared to the previous year.
Additionally, the import volumes of chromite and high carbon ferrochrome—key materials in stainless steel production—also demonstrated growth. Chromite imports rose by 22.51% year-on-year to 12.1575 million tons, while high carbon ferrochrome imports increased by 22.94% to 2.2508 million tons. These figures highlight China’s strong demand in the high-end metal materials sector, positioning it as a crucial player in the global market.

China’s Growing Influence in the Global Market
The import and export data for Chinese stainless steel and its main raw materials reflect not only the current trends in market supply and demand but also China’s increasing influence in the global metal market. As the country continues to export large volumes of stainless steel and import essential raw materials, it solidifies its role as a key player in the international metals industry. The growth in exports, despite slight decreases in some import categories, underscores China’s capacity to meet global demands while maintaining a strong domestic market.
This upward trajectory in China’s stainless steel industry is expected to continue, driven by both domestic production capabilities and external market opportunities. The ongoing investments in advanced production technologies and the expansion of international trade partnerships further reinforce China’s leadership in the global stainless steel market.

Strong Outlook for 2024 and Beyond
As China navigates the challenges and opportunities of the global market, its stainless steel industry stands out as a pillar of strength and innovation. The data from the first half of 2024 suggests a positive outlook for the remainder of the year, with the potential for continued growth in both exports and the import of raw materials. This positions China to maintain its competitive edge and continue to play a dominant role in the global metals industry.\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_element_layout_column][/cs_element_layout_row][/cs_element_section][/cs_content]
