In a strategic move to bolster regional trade, Hong Kong’s top trade official has concluded a high-profile visit to Bangkok, engaging with key government and business leaders to position the city as the indispensable gateway for economic collaboration. The mission underscores a concerted effort to deepen partnerships within one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions.
Prof Frederick Ma, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), emphasized the critical role of Asian economies in driving global growth. Speaking at the Singapore Regional Business Forum, Prof Ma outlined a vision where Hong Kong acts as both a “superconnector and super value-adder,” linking Mainland China’s vast industrial base and consumer market with the burgeoning opportunities in ASEAN and beyond.
“Businesses are diversifying amid the changing global landscape,” Prof Ma stated. “Asia remains a major engine for economic growth, underpinned by the rise of emerging markets. China is a stabilising force, and Hong Kong is the dynamic platform connecting it with the world.”
Building Bridges with Key Thai Partners
Beyond the forum, the visit was marked by significant one-on-one meetings aimed at fostering concrete cooperation. Prof Ma met with Chantawit Tantasith, Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Commerce, to discuss avenues for enhancing bilateral trade and investment flows.
In a separate meeting, Prof Ma exchanged views with Dhanin Chearavanont, Senior Chairman of the Charoen Pokphand Group, one of Thailand’s largest conglomerates. These discussions focused on practical steps to strengthen the economic relationship between Hong Kong and Thailand, which remains a vital trade and investment partner for the city.
“Thailand is an important partner for Hong Kong,” Prof Ma noted. “I am delighted that I had the opportunity to exchange insights with the Ministry of Commerce and leading enterprises in Thailand as well as political and business leaders from Singapore to further strengthen our economic ties.”
