Harbin International Ice and Snow Economy Expo 2026

The Harbin International Ice and Snow Economy Expo 2026 opened on January 6 in Harbin, the capital of northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. The event showcases cutting-edge achievements in the ice and snow economy, highlighting China’s growing role in the global winter industry. Held at the Harbin International Conference and Exhibition Center, the three-day expo includes a series of exhibitions and trade activities focused on key sectors such as sports, culture, equipment manufacturing, and tourism.

Global Participation and Industry Focus

The inaugural expo has attracted diplomats, city representatives, business leaders, and experts from over 20 countries and regions. Participants are discussing emerging opportunities in the global ice and snow economy, with a focus on innovation and collaboration. Heikki Kontiosalo, deputy speaker of the city council of Rovaniemi in Finland, noted that industrial-grade unmanned snow-removal machines, snowmobiles, and carbon fiber skis on display illustrate how Harbin’s natural resources have transformed into a hub for business and innovation.

According to Zhen Changyu, director of the Harbin municipal bureau of commerce, the expo spans more than 20,000 square meters. It features one central exhibition zone along with six themed zones, aiming to provide global investors with a comprehensive view of advancements in related fields. This setup underscores Harbin’s strategic efforts to boost its winter industry and attract international investment.

Technological Innovations and Academic Contributions

Yin Jingwei, president of Harbin Engineering University, introduced the university’s latest technological innovations at the expo. These include polar-operation unmanned aerial vehicles and vessels equipped with polar fuel systems, which have already been put into practical use. The university expressed readiness to offer further technical support for enterprises developing specialized winter transport equipment, emphasizing China’s push for technological innovation in harsh environments.

At the opening ceremony, eight institutions related to the ice and snow economy were officially launched. These include research laboratories, industry-education alliances, and international academic platforms, aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing the sector. This initiative reflects broader Chinese policies to integrate education, research, and industry in key economic areas.

The expo serves as a platform for showcasing China’s advancements in the winter industry while promoting international partnerships. With Harbin’s historical significance in ice and snow culture, the event aligns with national strategies to develop northern regions and enhance global trade in niche markets. As the expo continues, it is expected to facilitate deals and knowledge exchange, contributing to the growth of the ice and snow economy worldwide.
