2024 marks the 26th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa, with a successful partnership contributing to strong tourism and economic ties. As part of this collaboration, UnionPay International plays a vital role in enhancing payment experiences for Chinese tourists visiting South Africa.

From September 9 to 13, 2024, the South African Tourism Board hosted industry roadshows in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, featuring 45 South African tourism establishments engaging with nearly 400 tour operators. During these events, UnionPay International demonstrated its capabilities in supporting international transactions for tourists.

Flourishing China-South Africa Tourism Relations

In the past 26 years, tourism between China and South Africa has seen remarkable growth. South Africa's diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity have made it an increasingly popular destination for Chinese tourists. In 2023, the number of Chinese visitors to South Africa surged by 215.7% year-on-year, positioning China as one of South Africa's fastest-growing markets. From January to March 2024, international arrivals to South Africa reached 2.4 million, with Chinese tourist numbers growing by 82%.

"South African Tourism is set to unveil 'Discover South Africa's New Charms' in 2024, a campaign targeting Chinese tourists by focusing on sustainable tourism and unique travel experiences," said Mr. Gcobani Mancotywa, SA Tourism Regional General Manager: Asia-Pacific and Middle East. He emphasized the importance of strengthening industry partnerships to help recover the tourism sector and attract more visitors.

UnionPay International's Role in Enhancing Travel Convenience

For Chinese tourists, UnionPay cards have become essential while traveling in South Africa. Accepted at 90% of merchant POS terminals across the country, UnionPay provides multiple payment options, including cash withdrawals, card payments, QR code payments, and mobile payments. This wide acceptance enables Chinese travelers to enjoy their trips without needing to exchange currency beforehand.

To enhance the appeal of overseas spending, UnionPay International has collaborated with major Chinese banks to offer special cash-back and discount promotions. Cardholders from banks such as Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, and others can enjoy up to 12% cash-back benefits, making their trips more cost-effective and convenient.

A Bright Future for China-South Africa Tourism

The South African Tourism Board aims to attract over 50,000 Chinese tourists in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, with plans to return to pre-pandemic tourism levels by 2026. UnionPay International continues to play a pivotal role in this goal, ensuring seamless payment experiences for travelers.

As South Africa seeks to welcome 21 million international tourists by 2030, the partnership between China and South Africa through UnionPay International will remain a key driver of growth in tourism and economic relations. By offering an enhanced travel experience, UnionPay strengthens the bond between these two nations and supports the global tourism industry's recovery.
