The Guangming Science City Forum 2025 was held in Shenzhen’s Guangming district from December 4-5, 2025, as part of China’s efforts to bolster scientific and technological innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The event underscored Shenzhen’s position as a key hub for research and development, attracting global attention to its growing innovation ecosystem.
Launch of National Biomanufacturing Innovation Center
The forum marked the trial operation of the National Industrial Innovation Center for Biomanufacturing, China’s only national-level platform in this field. The center focuses on green and low-carbon technologies, bio-agriculture, and health care, with plans to develop six specialized platforms, including automated biomanufacturing, large-scale vector production, and quality-control facilities. This initiative aligns with China’s broader strategy to enhance its biomanufacturing capabilities and reduce environmental impact through advanced technologies.
Funding and Infrastructure Developments
During the forum, the Shenzhen Guangming Sci-Tech Innovation Fund of Funds was launched, with an initial capital commitment of approximately 1 billion yuan (about $140 million). This fund aims to support innovation projects and startups in the region, further solidifying Shenzhen’s role as a magnet for investment in high-tech sectors. Additionally, the National University Regional Technology Transfer and Transformation Center (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area) High-end Scientific Instrument Shenzhen Branch Center was inaugurated, enhancing technology transfer and commercialization efforts in the area.
Expert Insights and Global Participation
Top scientists and industry leaders from China and abroad delivered keynote talks, including Charles M. Lieber, a professor at the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, who discussed the latest developments in brain-computer interfaces. Seven high-level parallel sessions were held, fostering idea exchange, resource integration, and cooperation among participants. These discussions highlighted the forum’s role in promoting win-win cooperation and advancing scientific frontiers in the Greater Bay Area.
Guangming Science City’s Strategic Role
Guangming Science City, a key hub within the Greater Bay Area Comprehensive National Science Center pilot zone, is rapidly attracting innovation resources globally. It hosts major scientific facilities, two leading research universities, two provincial laboratories, and 11 research institutes, collectively supporting over 3,000 top-tier professionals. This concentration of talent and infrastructure positions Shenzhen as a critical player in China’s drive to become a global leader in science and technology, with a focus on sustainable and high-impact industries.
