China’s expanded visa-free policies in 2024 have significantly boosted inbound travel, with the number of foreign trips doubling compared to the previous year. According to the National Immigration Administration (NIA), more than 20 million visa-free inbound trips were recorded, representing an impressive 112.3% increase year-on-year. This surge highlights the success of China’s initiatives to enhance its openness and attract international visitors.

Record Growth in Cross-Border Movement

In 2024, China saw a total of 610 million cross-border trips, a remarkable 43.9% increase from the previous year. Among these, 64.88 million trips were made by foreign nationals, reflecting an 82.9% growth. This sharp rise indicates the strong global interest in visiting China, fueled by streamlined visa-free policies and an increasing number of conveniences for travelers.

Additionally, China issued approximately 2.6 million visas to foreigners, a 52.3% year-on-year increase. Authorities also facilitated visa extensions, renewals, and reissuances for over 72,000 foreign nationals, further supporting international mobility.

Streamlined Travel for Mainland Residents

Chinese authorities also enhanced services for mainland residents, issuing nearly 23.32 million passports in 2024—a 26.5% increase from the previous year. Moreover, over 94.5 million permits were granted for travel to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, marking a 9.8% year-on-year rise. These improvements have encouraged more mainland residents to explore opportunities abroad while strengthening regional connections.

Mainland residents made 291 million cross-border trips in 2024, a 41.3% increase, while Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan residents accounted for 254 million trips, up 38.8%. These figures underscore the growing mobility within Greater China and beyond.

Ensuring Secure and Efficient Border Management

China has not only facilitated increased travel but also prioritized security at its borders. In 2024, immigration authorities resolved more than 35,000 cases targeting border management, apprehending over 79,000 suspects. Efforts to combat drug-related activities resulted in nearly 500 cases being cracked, with authorities seizing 7.8 tonnes of narcotics.

These measures highlight the government’s focus on maintaining safety and ensuring efficient border operations amid a significant increase in travel volumes.

A Milestone for Visa-Free Policies

The substantial rise in visa-free inbound travel reflects global recognition of China’s expanded policies. With more than 20 million visa-free trips recorded in 2024, these initiatives are driving both tourism and international exchanges. By simplifying entry procedures, China has made it more convenient for travelers to explore its culture, landscapes, and opportunities.

As these policies continue to evolve, China is poised to strengthen its role as a global destination, fostering greater connectivity and exchange with the world.
